Certain life events have a percentage or rating of how stressful they are. Death of a spouse is 100% stressful (Bryan is fine); moving and losing your job are both in the 80-90% range (these apply). So armed with that tidbit I went to google: How stressful is my life? I asked google. (Which reminded me of the time I googled "Where is my mommy?" when I couldn't find her in the house. When my mom later googled something that started with "where is..." and that popped up as a suggested question, I was found out.) I couldn't find the scale of stress my mom referenced. But I did gain some perspective. Among the results was information about how stressful going to jail is, and about how stressful a condition known as gastroparesis is. As proof of the latter: "I cannot describe how stressful my life was during these years. Every time I burped, I would feel anxious. Was 'it' starting again?" I'm not incarcerated and can burp without a problem. I must be fine.Lauren Resslerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09718177944656890809noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8595013612087814176.post-28002089498629755092011-01-03T16:13:00.001-08:002011-01-03T16:29:53.889-08:00Happy New YearHappy 2011! It's strange to write that here when I'm pretty sure that I've told the few people who DO read this "Happy New Year" to their face. Forgive my being redundant.

2011 will be an interesting one as it begins the countdown to the end of this here blog. Bryan and I are moving, and alas, the clever moniker "Condo in Cando" will not be relevant. I've thought about all the different "home names" (tudor, cottage, ranch, trailer...which I'm pretty sure I know because of playing the game Life) and I can't think of another combination of town+house that would equal anything better than "Condo in Cando."

I told my sister we were moving and she (facetiously) pointed out that my biggest worry was probably what to name the blog. Granted, I'm not losing sleep over the name, but I did try to do a little blog research to see what other creative names are out there. What I found were a LOT of blogs written by people from the perspective of their pets. I thought, "This is like time-wasting squared; first the intitial time wasted writing the blog multiplied by my time wasted looking at them."

And because that last sentence really made me self conscious about blogging (that's probably what people have thought reading my blog!) I'll stop so as to avoid multiplying YOUR time wasted.Lauren Resslerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09718177944656890809noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8595013612087814176.post-85884525695425717612010-10-10T10:41:00.000-07:002010-10-10T11:04:51.204-07:00July to the Present

Here are some quick updates that span July to October:

For our anniversary, we went to "Guys and Dolls" at an historical fort. Except, in my case, it's, If You Give a Lauren Some Rhubarb.

It all started when Bryan suggested a geocaching adventure on Sunday. Here'a a memorable shot from our day.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSFN8PUHi_DRnGc1PVtZAeKCEWmGYtx5lchMizJVYmyAfDmWlFIVIQcC6NUBMIqtGBWIZnXScLZrUN_8EJjmzIed-XE-EOGw52LL4WZOvVEXLm14mZ06TbuyRDbn09SJvHfOpzDmq_Lzhw/s320/DSCN4014.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5481209905666414530" />
(we didn't ever find this cache...it was tucked away down this prairie trail near this museum and Bryan kept saying, "This is weird. I feel uncomfortable." So we gave up and went to DQ instead.)

One of the caches was located on a local farm - and not just any farm. It's the largest herb farm in ND. http://www.gardendwellersfarm.com/
We happened to be there on rhubarb harvest day so we decided to get some. I had no idea how much to get and was told there's about 5 cups in a pie. So I decided to get enough for two pies.

After cutting, blanching, and freezing, I ended up with 14 cups.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLv9ScJTVt-TeimueqivIGdRtJhyRhO4iy6uRa3-qE7bbAwxfGn3ESAfG75q3749NrAS_9eL1CG8OvJvrkmN3BVTvyf_A_avxszHIkQzi5kfYTQtuV1OPMdA_zpJ5exxOsjuOhZeN175J5/s320/DSCN4018.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5481210693675360962" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBrqQxqG0TOZnLS1AVPkmA-ZS3pmXWI7U1Dpev3BT3Yudgkyb-K-4NnVQvyw6bj0y3ACKYtAGBkzF0y3Q1USynxnZ003OFwQAQdoupsnSVasNoT1ZD-VYrFrZ6cihyphenhyphennvLFPcRxUi2JMM6K/s320/DSCN4020.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5481210699493855362" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi73-EWkqrMFbPUQhIeeiRr7yGjhPdPux5OUKgeS0Y6xR9j-hp_eF3OGW2MTrEvesvfQAu6W_u5xeLUQcdDOQYcCoRJ8SDLQv28slhecavmyw4ncioLB_RZI3GyHrKxU1BkqbvMzjGu9Zi7/s320/DSCN4023.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5481210704672361074" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiPEcaKH-IYtUf3z-DA1VPRpv7rvmUFJrIVGHs5UXBDCfIp_-NcMhnG49xzNhx1P2wh0CIgidVBReg1pQokYzSdL3zBKRHhAC62iCopcDFiIMSQHzsm4l0hv6cqut2xuL62IT0DfzNTYeU/s320/DSCN4022.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5481210711812060514" />
Note: after performing this process, I was told by my mom that you don't really have to blanch rhubarb. He made the javelin look really easy...and he got a PR of 113 feet!

When the track meet was over, Karen and I went on an adventure! I'd been wanting to try geocaching for awhile, but we didn't own a GPS, so the hobby was out of reach. We recently bought a Garmin, so I decided to try to GPS-treasure-hunt. I went online to geocaching.com, became a member, and searched all of the hidden geocaches in the area. Turns out there are a few in Jamestown, so I picked two for us to search after the track meet. The coordinates for the first geocache led us to the campus of Jamestown College, which was really close to the track meet. The little box was cleverly hidden on a light post. We signed the log and returned it to its spot.

The second geocache was a little more interesting. The coordinates took us to a little park with a gazebo. Then the GPS died... As were were searching around the gazebo, a man pulled up and we thought, "Hmmm....is he geocaching, too?"

He wasn't.... It was National Train Day and he was setting up for a program in honor of the day. He showed us the public service announcement and the order of events and lamented that it wasn't well advertised so we should stay around. Another man pulled up and blew his train whistle. That seemed like our signal to get out of there. So we gave up on that geocache, but the hunt made it worth it!Lauren Resslerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09718177944656890809noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8595013612087814176.post-60035073838184498532010-04-20T19:01:00.000-07:002010-04-20T19:10:50.934-07:00PotteryI had my first foray into pottery this evening. There's an artist-in-residence at school this week teaching the high schoolers all about ceramics. In the evenings he offers classes to adults. Last night we made finger bowls (sculpting the clay into a bowl with your....fingers....hence the name). Tonight we graduated up to the wheel!

You literally throw a round ball of clay onto the wheel, but I was too embarassed to ask if that's where the phrase, "throwing a pot" comes from. The artist that taught us, his name is Memo, was really helpful. I was surprised with how difficult it was and how easy it was to make a mistake. In fact, the pot is really more Memo's than mine because he stepped in to fix all of my mistakes.

The pot hasn't been fired yet so I don't really know what the final product will look like, but I'm really happy with how it looks now. I just have to decide what to store in my new bowl....change?.....post-its?....bobby pins?....SALSA?....I'm leaning toward salsa. I'll have to ask Memo if it's safe to eat out of.Lauren Resslerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09718177944656890809noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8595013612087814176.post-7540442662254503902010-04-11T17:41:00.000-07:002010-04-11T17:49:56.976-07:00A little slow around here...Things have been slow in the condo.

Exhibit A - The cat commandeering the largest chair we have for her 8th nap of the day. It was really gratifying. Now I know why people coach things for years and years. It's a LOT more fun to "win" through others. So, being the proud coach I am, I took a picture of the plaque. Being the unprepared coach that I am, I didn't have my camera at the meet to take pictures of the students WITH the plaque.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRmS-lSspPeoDs0UJhsfjGLdCvkvLpdfvfMzPrSeoUjvW80huvUHmM89ChyphenhyphenD7E20_ue1IL12jyvzVfj4kNjCn8wYVef8vHdUVTIE5Cdzak8AXBZSeGnt8U_Np4XqYvJEMtLAyuP07l0HOx/s320/DSCN3937.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5438202591138272034" />

Cookies:
As a member of the Cando Arts Council (which means I attend meetings once a month at which I say nothing and sometimes volunteer to either hang up posters for cultural events or offer my students extra credit to attend aforementioned cultural events) I was called upon to do something challenging: make a dessert that someone would pay for. It's going to be on a dessert buffet tonight at the art gallery. Extra challenge: make it valentines-y so that it can have a cute name. So, after much online searching and consulting with Bryan, I settled on the Game of Love cookies.

I'm thinking these are sugar cookies...I just followed the recipe so I'm not sure. The checkerboard pattern was created by stacking long squared off logs of white dough and chocolate dough.

Bryan's comment about the whole process: "You're very brave."

He didn't know that my back up plan was a tube of sugar cookie dough in the fridge...

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtOjAXwa8w-3Cpca6LBTJP0fHhY4OPaOtT5iXP6aLcZTFn_H-ylhYzSrtqvGTr9E7fgslOX8uYBgDo-Teo-Pl_MU-a0_vdUQhciGGgAqTsT7A_CnKAaxxJnIYWPASO_Pn_JEr1TdFZy5Gc/s320/DSCN3938.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5438202602561122194" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwRV71B4q9mWEZCtfBfLMDcGIhVHNsX10k9qPDdaM62dLubEmeGSnJekYtirz4tW1hCP-Rwf6E9NSKCdt_6QzVDoaaym1k-EmsDlR6-0CrfkJNihdDjfHCIFsY1H4mRKS086UOKKQYomsN/s320/DSCN3939.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5438202606547577378" />Lauren Resslerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09718177944656890809noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8595013612087814176.post-25695658337877595572010-01-23T12:13:00.000-08:002010-01-23T12:33:59.300-08:00OrlandoA few pictures from our trip:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHp5UE2p0SusmX-LVOGodY-KbV38BFtbVA-1fVLfD1EmDUMN76fJQNyyiRAf7_karqdQ7-JEWghyphenhyphenkeLIF0xRyu1kTPhQrAzfXF8zRj5wsPq5G5dAD7fNkNTq6Ljs5q6ByhOLS5nwEZev33/s320/DSCN3901.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5430033020654056002" />
First and foremost, it was cold. I only started chronicling the process on day two, so I don't have pictures of being hunched over the candy thermometer waiting for it to read 240 degrees (which is soft ball stage...which means nothing to me but that's what the magazine said.) Nor do I have pictures of my mixer whipping the ingredients into the best looking fluff I've ever seen. I didn't know something that delicious looking could come out of my kitchen. But, I do have pictures of day two.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxA2fBaHNpJv95l_k_1190lNpshpIh6kgHUodAvSEHOmwTBqwhyphenhyphenxEhGr0MmIP9vzHzCpAu7UH0J60dizt0cBop1Xr6_d7fEnHzkEMLiv6EJsgbaooLddD6y2WMLPnkVb-c1TooQN7v6YOK/s320/DSCN3868.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5417514170021212466" />

The delicious-looking fluff was poured into a foil lined pan to sit overnight. The tin foil was coated with butter for easy removal. Then I used a cooking spray coated pizza cutter to make little cubes. She called her show "Rhythm of Life" and I wish I had a video of Jessica's artist's talk because she said some really profound things that make viewing the art that much better.
My favorite quote from her talk:
"The blank canvas knows me better than anyone."

In lieu of a video, I'll put some excerpts from her artist's statement:

"My artwork is centered on my faith, which is the core of my life. I express a passion for life; it affirms a truth I find in nature and life itself."

"I like the freedom of expressing oneself with abstract thoughts, but using concrete feelings, thus, I feel compelled to act out on what evokes those feelings through my works of art. Early practitioners of expressionism and abstraction wanted art to become more like music; I share this view, and as such, I paint to a personal rhythm conveying the suggestion of the “rhythm of life” as I see it."

"I love the way paint moves on the canvas and how one color unites with another. Using strong brush strokes, higher energy and vivid colors, I express emotions that have moved me. The scale of the pieces is necessary to articulate the overwhelming power of these emotions and the natural world around us. Paint goes from edge-to-edge continuing beyond the border, leaving you with a sense of never ending possibilities that are before us. Trusting in a higher power is paramount in the conceptual process that goes beyond feelings, thoughts and experiences. In every painting I reveal my life and the lives around me…The Rhythm of Life."

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOaARmlDBWYi_tOHejoWrM6zHy-0QdtvTeECxyViCDdfiv3Q2tSwnZrREp9DeDdUXezF6H7fb4vvcgBC82qFNDp1fDP9eLQ-_jvbsnq2KEsCykiayOoD7UkiZEnaGqZBSVLnKkkrA2Z5f8/s320/DSCN3851.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5417505698145802226" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgE9u1vzTuX2ST7d1VarzIX_J-Sf6XbP0DxzAJ3HRtCYIRIyRCegIZCPmfRnb_wlIlUifHrIo2IGdGZnnzKxpKPZyX9NmSATr6QhzWLYXVrT6h_ii5K2Rbl7642_ozpFFAgk_PzBO4CoJ_O/s320/DSCN3848.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5417505692417820866" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCVSuV5cjWfkp1ORZbcH2cDQsxRdykFIoSWroAaUiW-p-cNHsxY1Z3jvRfFhzWyLkRIrbAWgdrs0WXTpbaMZFrnGOtvYoxqcY4YlF0Ll5yS-dA-MhJ3BhSfxvoqW0M4DtV5aiP0ePI42d1/s320/DSCN3847.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5417505688107157570" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiq7bYexjNaZOkh-EiR0kaiUo08wPWFjL1GusdN44zuQKoUahlvJt7YnJx3eFhSSk6CCu0Krvf85rpu9MQT1CJNs9KWXKjttI5cAaJ_COtBpxLnC87CrOnRuwXv-IwBkBvPy5WNkLZAP1oG/s320/DSCN3842.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5417505680360203714" />

These were some of my favorites. He broke the first one after trying to put too many papers through. He did try really hard to fix it, but it was a goner. He brought the new one home, placed it on the counter and proclaimed, "Deuce!" Struck me funny. He's much more conservative with the allotment of paper he puts through deuce.Lauren Resslerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09718177944656890809noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8595013612087814176.post-27004456156645913072009-11-18T17:39:00.000-08:002009-11-18T18:02:21.969-08:00Bliss on FilmI caught Bryan in a state of pure joy this evening - his new spotting scope came. I think it's important that I write. I never envisioned myself as a novel writer, but when I stumbled upon a site called nanowrimo.org (NAtional NOvel WRIting MOnth) that challenged writers to write a 50,000 word novel during the month of November, I saw myself as a novelist for the first time.

What I have learned: There's a LOT of words between 1 and 50,000 AND a big difference between someone who simply wants to write a novel and someone who actually does.

Someone who simply wants to write a novel will:
...award herself with a chip and salsa after every 20 words.
...spend more time formatting the titles of her chapters than actually writing the content of the chapters. (okay, honestly, chapter....not chapterS)
...think repeatedly, "The word 'novel' is daunting. Is writing several novellas cheating?"

I'm convinced someone who writes a novel does simply that - forces herself to sit and write.

I'm considering this mission sadly a failure because I sit with a Draft 1 that contains 3,500 words and I have 12 days left in November. I have to write roughly 3900 words each day to make it.

Maybe if I stopped wasting so many words blogging I could get it done...Lauren Resslerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09718177944656890809noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8595013612087814176.post-2077740494584641712009-11-07T17:38:00.000-08:002009-11-07T17:45:38.613-08:00HuntingI always envisioned myself as the person who was going to like deer hunting season because it meant I could be alone in the house or I could take a day trip somewhere. This year, I actually partook in the festivities.

Evidence:
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5aEZ7IYbAiYp_gPDAxOCSd_7ey4qOIcA71YwMPEWyNKUb95wV6cnxMIizkvZHM8OJOVyVA9guJUDJISgtkTwq42dPmpBst_gCUPSY9sGYazcmzUb6ll7183Ic7b4_8FLDflCbaHuDCQRy/s320/100_2720.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5401542163006921042" />

Bryan wasn't successful today, though. The REAL head coach is Canadian and had a little problem with his Visa a few weeks ago which led to him stepping down and me stepping up. I have a whole new respect for coaches of all kinds and though it's fun to make the big decisions I miss the days of simply telling the head coach how many time outs are left and answering the question, "Can I go to the bathroom?" during huddles.

My new Coach tennis shoes are getting a lot of wear, though.Lauren Resslerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09718177944656890809noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8595013612087814176.post-32598165125167822272009-09-01T20:05:00.000-07:002009-09-01T20:13:48.031-07:00What a great guyAfter coaching in a small town last year where you really don't know anybody, I realized how important it was to have one fan there that you know. Bryan is my one fan and I couldn't be more grateful. He is the med bag carrier, the water getter, the after game synopsis listener and the patiently waiting driver while we calculate stats. I think coaching is good for our marriage.Lauren Resslerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09718177944656890809noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8595013612087814176.post-19486652796908796232009-08-22T20:03:00.000-07:002009-08-22T20:04:42.552-07:00"You are the only girl I know......who brings magazines in the combine." -Bryan

I enjoyed all 500 pages of InStyle's 15th anniversary issue while Bryan combined 50 acres of peas.
